Euromatrix
DESCRIPTION:
EUROMATRIX is an European project funded by the European Community under the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and
Technological Development, and promoted by a consortium which has brought together internationally recognized research groups in machine
translation, and several relevant industrial partners.
The EuroMatrix project aims at giving a major push to machine translation (MT) research,
applying the most advanced MT technologies systematically to many pairs of European languages, paying special attention to the languages of the
"new" member states. At the same time the project addresses urgent European economic and social needs by concentrating on European languages
and on high-quality translation to be employed for the publication of technical, social, legal and political documents. In order to achieve
it objectives, the project has been focused on the one hand on the creation of translation systems for most pairs of EU languages and on the
other on the open source machine translation technology including research tools, software and data, by systematically compiling and constantly
updating a detailed survey of the state on MT technology for all EU language pairs.
CELCT'S ROLE:
The progress of the project has been evaluated through annual campaigns and workshops organized by CELCT and the University of Edinburgh, in order
to create a forum for researchers to gather and exchange ideas. After a dry-run, whose results were presented at the ACL 2007 Second Workshop on
Statistical Machine Translation in Prague, in spring 2008 the First Euromatrix Evaluation Campaign was launched and its results were discussed both
at the Second Machine Translation Marathon (Berlin, May 12-20) and at the ACL 2008 Third Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation
(Columbus, Ohio, June 2008). The final campaign will be held in December 2008, and the results will be presented at MT workshop at
EACL 2009 (Athens), and at the Third Machine Translation Marathon, which will take place in Prague in spring 2009.
In the context of Euromatrix also two Translingual Europe Days have been organized. These events aim at informing the participants on recent
progress in machine translation technology and on actions for exploiting and improving state-of-the-art technology.
